How to open a door (seriously)

Surely there is nothing to learn about opening doors? Here is just a quick hint to avoid those occasional embarrassing moments when faced with a pair of double doors when we try to open the wrong one, and it’s locked.

If only one of a pair of double doors is able to open, because one of them is somehow bolted shut, it is always the one with the keyhole (or similar locking device) that will open. So in our image here, it’ll be the right door that you should go for. If there is any doubt, push both doors at the same time.

Bonus hint: If there is a handle that can be pulled, the odds are that the door should be pulled, not pushed.

  • My immediate reaction to this post was that it was a bit pointless. However, the number of times I’ve seen people smack into a door in full walk justifies the post. The only drawback I can see with it is that, along with people tripping over a little when walking, people walking into locked doors is one of the most enduringly funny things you can see. Hopefully some people won’t see this post and carry on this most funny of occurrances!!!

  • Holy crap. As if I never worked that out. Thankyou! You’ve actually made my life 1000 times better.
